Antenatal Assessment and Care

INTRODUCTION

The aim of this course is to equip nurses and other health care providers with the foundational knowledge necessary to conduct comprehensive antenatal assessments of the childbearing person and family, identify potential risk factors and warning signs during pregnancy, provide evidence-informed nursing care in relation to common perinatal health concerns during pregnancy, and promote access to the resources needed for health during pregnancy.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

As a result of completing this course learners will be able to…

  • Identify the recommended screening and assessment involved in providing comprehensive antenatal care.
  • Identify potential risk factors during pregnancy that influence antenatal care and perinatal outcomes.
  • Recognize the value of the Nova Scotia Prenatal Record to guide and support antenatal care and education.
  • Identify the learning needs of the childbearing family in relation to pregnancy, perinatal risks, making informed choices, planning for birth, and infant care.
