Fetal Health Surveillance, Part 2

Learning objectives

The Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada consensus guideline revision for intrapartum Fetal Health Surveillance (FHS) was released in the Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology of Canada in March 2020.

Objectives for the RCP’s orientation FHS modules are based on the outline of the FHS Fundamentals course, which is the standard education endorsed by professional organizations representing perinatal health care providers across Canada. Review of the RCP modules does not replace a Fundamentals course; these provide an overview. Please contact your local unit educator for information regarding Fundamentals course availability.

Before reviewing Part Two, please ensure you have recently reviewed Part One of the RCP’s FHS learning module series so that you have a good understanding of the physiological basis of fetal heart rate changes in labour and their interpretation

The objectives for Part Two of this series are:

  • To review the principles that guide FHSL
  • To describe the indications and technique used for electronic fetal monitoring; the classification and interpretation of findings, and the response to these
  • To describe additional approaches that can be utilized to assess and diagnose fetal well-being in labour
