RCP Fetal Health Surveillance Workshops
Fundamentals of FHS:
Date: Tuesday, November 19 & Wednesday, November 20, 2024
Time: 0830h-1300h each day
• This virtual workshop takes place over 2 x 4.5-hour sessions.
• Attendance at both sessions is mandatory.
• Pre-requisite completion of the FHS Canada Fundamentals of FHS online manual and exam must be completed prior to attending the workshop.

Time: 0830h-1300h each day
• This virtual workshop takes place over 4 x 4.5-hour sessions.
• Attendance at all FOUR sessions is mandatory.
• Pre-requisite completion of the FHS Canada Fundamentals of FHS online manual and exam must be completed prior to attending the workshop.
• There will be additional pre-workshop materials distributed closer to the workshop dates to help participants prepare.

Acute Care of the at-Risk Newborn (ACoRN) Workshops
RCP is offering the Acute Care of the at-Risk Newborn (ACoRN) education program for both providers and instructors. Dates for upcoming provider and instructor workshops can be found here.

ACoRN is designed to be an interdisciplinary education program and is open to all health care providers caring for neonates. ACoRN is a program developed by the Canadian Pediatric Society to teach a systematic approach for stabilization, assessment and care of babies who are unwell or at-risk of becoming unwell in the first few hours or days following birth. The ACoRN process builds on the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) as guidance for the next steps in care following a resuscitation.
Listeria Testing Algorithm – In response to recent questions about exposure to products that may have been contaminated with listeria, we would like to remind providers of a testing and treatment algorithm that was developed by the IWK and RCP for pregnant patient with presumptive listeria exposure. The algorithm is posted on the RCP website.
Pregnant patients with a positive blood culture for listeria should be referred to the Fetal Assessment & Treatment Centre (FATC) for surveillance.
The FATC referral form can be found on the IWK website.
Note: A new form must be printed for each referral (due to the barcode) and the form must be faxed to FATC at 902- 470−7987.
Fetal Movement Counting Resource – A fetal movement resource has been developed by care providers at IWK Health with contribution from the Reproductive Care Program of NS. The goal of the practice resource is to offer prenatal care providers across Nova Scotia with a resource that will assist them in guiding pregnant persons regarding fetal movement.
The practice resource is posted to the RCP website and provides care providers with a colorful infographic. Feel free to print the resource for easy reference and / or for posting within your clinical spaces.
Smart Parent Launch - The IWK Health Centre and Nova Scotia Health Public Health are excited to launch the pilot of the SmartParent program. SmartParent is a free evidence-based text messaging program that sends information to achieve a healthy pregnancy and birth, timed and tailored to the specific stage of pregnancy. We are requesting support from our healthcare and community partners in the pilot program in sharing the details of this valuable prenatal resource with colleagues, patients, and families. Additional information is available for parents on the IWK website and for care providers on the SmartParent website. SmartParent also provides posters which can be downloaded and posted in public spaces and online. Please encourage your perinatal patients and clients to sign up for SmartParent so they can benefit from the information shared throughout this transformational time in their lives. FASD Conference Save the Date 2025 – FASD Atlantic and FASD Newfoundland in partnership are hosting the 2025 Atlantic Conference in St. John’s Newfoundland on April 9-11, 2025. The theme is "From Lived Experience to Collective Action: Strengthening Community Responses to FASD, Substance Use, and Harm Reduction in Atlantic Canada". Infant and Early Mental Health Promotion (IEMHP) Workshop: The Hospital for Sick Children is offering a workshop- Working with Mothers Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence with their Infants. The workshop will equip participants with awareness into the developmental impact of intimate partner violence on infants and young children, through interactive virtual scenarios simulating home visits to affected families. The workshop is online and is on November 21, 2024, from 1-4EST. For more details and to registerer go to the Sick Kids website.
SOGC Media Release on Maternal Mortality - As the national voice for women’s health, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) is calling for a national framework for standardized collection and surveillance of maternal mortality and morbidity data in Canada.
