Obstetric Care in the ED

This 4-hour workshop will be of interest to health professionals who work in community hospitals in Nova Scotia without an active Labour and Birth service. In addition to supporting unplanned birth, topics include pregnancy loss, and symptoms and complications that prompt women to seek care in the ER.

Learning Outcomes:

1.Identify sources of knowledge & resources for obstetrical /newborn care.

2.Identify the components of an obstetric assessment.

3.Demonstrate the management of an imminent birth.

4.Discuss the initial and ongoing assessment and care of a postpartum person and newborn.

5.Describe the most common presenting concerns during pregnancy:

  • antenatal bleeding,
  • threatened preterm labour,
  • trauma,
  • hypertension, and
  • postpartum hemorrhage.
