Neonatal Resuscitation Program

From the Canadian Paediatric Society website:

The Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) is an educational program that introduces the concepts and skills of neonatal resuscitation.

In Canada, NRP is administered by the Canadian Paediatric Society and is designed to teach individuals and teams who may be required to resuscitate newborn babies. NRP course content is evidence-based and is delivered across Canada in both English and French.

Completion of an NRP course does not mean that an individual is competent to perform neonatal resuscitation.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

  1. How do I register for an NRP Provider course?

In Nova Scotia, Provider courses are taught by registered NRP Instructors at all hospitals with a maternity service, as well as through Medavie HealthEd. While spaces at hospital-based courses are normally reserved for hospital staff and physicians, additional spaces may be available for outside learners.  If you are located in or near Halifax and the IWK Health Centre, you may contact the coordinators for NRP directly via email: NRP@iwk.nshealth.ca. If you would like to attend a course elsewhere in the province, contact RCP for more information.

Prior to attending an NRP Provider course, participants are required to successfully complete the Canadian version of the NRP Online Exam ($23.50 USD) and print the certificate to present to the course Instructor. The online exam may be accessed via this link: http://www.cps.ca/en/nrp-prn/online-examination. Instructions for Self-Registration may be found here: http://www.cps.ca/nrp/NRP-Online-Exam-Instructions-en.pdf

Please be aware that there may be additional fees charged by facilities to NRP course attendees who are not facility staff. You are advised to ask about this when your Provider course registration is confirmed.

  2. I would like to become an NRP Instructor. Can you tell me how to apply for an NRP Instructor Course?

The process for becoming an NRP Instructor has been established by the CPS NRP Steering Committee. Instructor status is granted following the process which is outlined below. NRP Instructor courses are usually offered once per year, in the late Winter or Spring. Eligibility criteria are listed on the CPS NRP website: http://www.cps.ca/en/nrp-prn/becoming-a-registered-instructor. Candidates must complete an application which is then forwarded to the Atlantic Region NRP Advisory Committee for consideration. If you meet the eligibility criteria and would like more information or an application, please contact RCP.
