The Nova Scotia Perinatal Health and Key Performance Indicator Dashboard was developed by Perinatal Newborn Health Nova Scotia (PNHNS) with input from members of the Nova Scotia Pregnancy and Newborn Care Council.
• Perinatal Health Indicators (PHIs) reflect the health status of the population and include determinants of health. Examples: rates of hypertension or diabetes in pregnancy, postpartum hemorrhage rates, postpartum or newborn readmission rates
• Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) include measures of health system performance and care delivery quality. Examples: cesarean section rates, delayed cord clamping rates, and rates of newborns placed skin-to-skin after birth.
As new issues are identified, or new data sources become available, additional indicators will be added and current indicators may be refined or retired.
A note about language
The Nova Scotia Atlee Perinatal Database (NSAPDB) uses specific terms to differentiate between the health status, care, and outcomes of the birthing person and the newborn. These terms are used in definitions for indicator numerators or denominators.
• Patient – refers to the childbearing/birthing/postpartum person
• Infant – refers to the newborn/infant
• Delivery – refers to the birthing person experience
• Birth – refers to a newborn/infant experience.
