Obstetric Patients in the ED - February 2026 (Dartmouth)

This is a 4.5-hour workshop designed for staff working in emergency departments to support their care of pregnant patients who present in the second or third trimester of pregnancy.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Identify sources of knowledge & resources for obstetrical and newborn care.
  2. Identify the components of an obstetric assessment.
  3. Describe the most common presenting concerns during pregnancy:
    • antenatal bleeding,
    • threatened preterm labour,
    • trauma, hypertension, and
    • postpartum hemorrhage.
  4. Demonstrate the management of an imminent birth.
  5. Discuss the initial and ongoing assessment and care of a postpartum person and newborn.
